If you’re anything like most homeowners, you enjoy a clean house.
The problem is, you don’t enjoy the act of actually getting the
house clean. Since most of us consider cleaning a “chore,”
we tend to focus on the most frequently occupied rooms of the house, or
the dirtiest areas, and simply neglect the rest. Well, there are lots
of areas of the house that are considered “unseen” or “unimportant”
that do in fact, need to be cleaned — and should be cleaned sooner
than later.
1 – The Refrigerator
We’re not even talking about the shelves this time, although those
should be cleaned regularly too. We’re talking about the vents and
the coils either at the very bottom of the refrigerator or in the back.
No only will vacuuming the dust away help reduce energy bills, because
your refrigerator won’t have to work as hard to release heat, it
will also extend the life of this major appliance. All it takes is a vacuum
cleaner and about 5-10 minutes of your time.
2 – The Dryer
You probably remember to empty the lint trap each time you use the dryer,
because it’s usually located in plain sight. What you probably don’t
see though, is the amount of lint that escapes through gaps around the
drum and falls into the dryer cabinet or the lint that gets caught in
the dryer vent.
Similar to the refrigerator, it’s vital to use a vacuum to clean
out the dryer cabinet and the vent. This will help the appliance work
more efficiently and prevent the risk of a fire.
3 – The Air Conditioner
Your central cooling system requires regular maintenance from a professional
at least once a year. However, there are plenty of ways you can perform
your own maintenance in order to keep the equipment clean. Vacuum the
dust and dirt off of the filter and remove dust, leaves and dead grass
from the condenser unit outside.
4 – The Dishwasher
One would think the dishwasher would be clean after getting your dishes
and kitchenware sparkling. However, the dirt and grime from those items
needs to go somewhere and traces are often left all throughout the inside
of the appliance.
In order to get it clean, place a small bowl full of vinegar on the top
rack. Sprinkle some baking soda on the inside and run a full cycle. It’s
also a good idea to wipe down the inside of the dishwasher door lip.
5 – The Garbage Disposal
Sure, throw a few ice cubes and citrus peels down the disposal can help
clean the blades, but have you ever looked underneath the splash guard?
We recommend lifting it up and using an old toothbrush to scrub away food
remnants and grime. Then rinse some cold water down the drain to wash
it all away.
