If you’re not careful, there are lots of electrical and fire hazards that come about with outdoor holiday decor. Follow the tips below to keep your home and your family safe this season:
Don’t overload outlets or circuits. Be sure to match amperage of electrical products with the amperage rating of extension cords and receptacles.
Check all light strings and electrical cords for damage including fraying and cuts in the line before plugging them in.
Take the time to secure lights and decorations to the house, the trees or the yard, but be careful not to pierce any electrical wires or cord insulation.
Avoid draping wires through areas prone to standing water.
If you’re using a ladder to hang decorations, make sure it extends at least three feet over the roofline or working area. It’s also a good idea to ask a family member or friend to sturdy the ladder while you climb.
