Clearing a Clogged Garbage Disposal

You want your kitchen to be neat and clean for your holiday guests, right? Nobody wants to eat in one that’s dirty, smelly, or worse – filled with insects. And that’s what can happen if you have a clogged garbage disposal and don’t do anything about it. Read below to find out how you can prevent clogged disposals this holiday season.

  1. What Can’t Go Down: the cooks in your family are going to have their hands, and plates, full preparing holiday feasts in the next week. Sometimes it’s easier to just toss all of the scraps into the disposal rather than getting rid of them safely. But this can be bad news for the motor and the blades especially when it comes to stringy vegetables like celery and asparagus and bones from your favorite meat.

  2. Don’t Opt For Chemicals: there are lots of “drain cleaners” on the market that are filled with harmful chemicals. Not only are these bad for the pipes and other moving parts in the disposal, they can also be bad for your own health.

  3. Clearing The Clog: in most cases, you’ll be able to see what is causing the clog and remove it using tongs. If that doesn’t do the trick, the trap might be clogged. This is the S or P shaped pipe connected the disposal unit. Remove the trap and get rid of any sludge that could be clogging the pipe. Just remember to place a bucket or pan underneath first.
