If you haven’t done so already, you’ve only got few days left to deck the halls – Christmas and Chanukah are less than a week away. While festive decorations are a major part of the holiday season, they can pose as major fire hazards if you’re not careful. In order to keep your family and friends safe this holiday season, you’ll want to follow the safety tips below:
Instead of lighting traditional candles, use battery-operated candles instead. No flame eliminates the risk of fire especially when they’re placed near other flammable items.
If you plan on lighting a candle or a fire in the fireplace, make sure all other objects are at least 12 inches away.
Keep the Christmas tree, toys, wrapping paper, cardboard boxes and all other flammable objects away from heat sources. This includes the fireplace, warm air vents, radiators, the oven and the stove.
Water the tree daily to prevent it from drying out. Dry trees are much more susceptible to catching fire.
Never overload electrical outlets and be sure to replace worn or broken cords and bulbs.
Remember to turn off all decorations, blow out candles and put out the fire before going to bed.
