Does My Central AC Need a Charge?

Is your air conditioner just not pumping out cold air like it used to? There’s never a good time for an air conditioning system to lose it’s cool, especially during the warmest days of summer. While an AC’s coolant is supposed to last the lifetime of the equipment, accidental damage and wear and tear can cause it to run out early. How do you know if it’s time for a charge? See below to find out:

  1. Check the thermostat first. Sometimes it needs to reset or calibrated so that the temperature of the air coming out matches the temperature it’s set to. Try raising the temperature of the thermostat to 85 degrees and give it about a half hour. Then turn it

back down to 60 degrees and wait for the unit to kick on. If it still doesn’t blow cool air, you may need coolant.

  2. Look for frost buildup. An air conditioner’s coolant is a gas that can freeze things it comes in contact with. Frost buildup can reduce airflow and cause your system to blow warmer air.

  3. Practice proper maintenance techniques. Your unit should be cleaned regularly to keep dirt and debris away. Additionally, you should be cleaning or replacing the filter monthly because they can become clogged over time.

If none of these options work, be sure to contact Uptown right away. We’ll send a technician over to get your system back up and running. After all, we’ve been trusted in the Twin Cities for over 100 years!
