It’s the first official day of spring so that means we should start seeing warmer temperatures in the near future, right? Although cold air is still holding on for dear life, it’s time to start getting your air conditioning system ready for spring and summer.
Did you know that nearly 90% of all air conditioning-related service calls are related to leaky systems? What you may not realize is that most leaks are minor and can probably be solved by a handy do-it-yourselfer. But before we get into fixing the problem, you should understand the three main causes of air conditioner leaks:
The overflow drain pan is cracked or broken.
You didn’t perform the necessary maintenance task of cleaning or replacing the filter as needed.
The condensate line is clogged.
Solving The Problem
The first step is to check your overflow drain pan. If you notice that it has been cracked or it has any small holes you can patch them up with epoxy glue, but this is only a temporary solution. Your best bet is to replace the pan.
Next, check on the filter. If you can’t remember cleaning or replacing it, chances are this is the reason why your system is leaking. Clean or replace the filter immediately if it appears dirty because a dirty filter can cause ice to form when ice melts, it drips.
The third reason is the most common cause of air conditioner leaks. The condensate line’s job is to drain condensation from the overflow pan so if it is clogged, water will back up and flood the overflow pan.
If your central air conditioning system is still leaking after you have performed the above tasks, give Uptown a call. Our air conditioning experts will stop by to diagnose and solve the problem and get your system back up and running drip-free.
