Getting the Stink out of Your Disposal

Ever walk into your kitchen only to be hit in the face with a foul odor? We’re not talking about when your spouse is chopping onions or preparing fresh broccoli, we’re talking about the stench coming from your garbage disposal. Follow the simple steps below to get rid of the smell so you don’t have to hold your nose next time.

First, turn on the hot water and let it run for a few seconds with the disposal turned on. This will help to wash down any stagnant pieces of food that might be left in the drain.

Next, pour about ¼ cup of baking soda into the drain and let it sit for an hour or two. Then pour ½ cup of vinegar down the drain. Vinegar is a natural deodorizer and bacteria killer.

Again, let the solution sit for about an hour. Then turn the disposal on and let the cold water run for around 40 seconds. Voila, the smell should be gone!

If this doesn’t do the trick, you may have a more serious problem. If that’s the case call on the experts at Uptown Plumbing to come by and take a look.
