We’re approaching the time of year when air conditioners across the country start kicking into high gear. With warmer weather on the way, it’s natural for homeowners to run to the thermostat whenever the house begins to feel a little warm, but there are times when our cooling systems simply need a break. So, how can you keep the house cool without cranking up the A/C? Find out a few alternative cooling hacks, below:
Control how much heat comes in. Close drapes, shades or shutters during the day to prevent direct sunlight from streaming through. This is especially important for windows on the south and west-facing sides of your house.
Reduce humidity levels. When the humidity level inside your house exceeds 60%, it can make it feel warmer than it actually is. Be sure to run exhaust fans while cooking and bathing and it’s a good idea to consider a dehumidification system for problem areas.
Unplug heat-producing appliances. Lots of appliances in your home give off heat whether you’ve noticed it before or not. When you’re not using things like the television, computer or lamps, be sure to turn them off and unplug them.
Take cooking outdoors. Since cooking with the stove or oven will inevitably heat your home, what is one to do? Brush off that grill and take your food outside. Believe it or not, you can grill just about any food you would cook indoors – pizza, vegetables, fish and even desserts are not off-limits.
