How to Cool down Your Hot Attic

Have you ever went up into your attic during the summertime? Chances are, you started to sweat in just a few seconds. If you don’t have adequate ventilation up there temperatures can soar to 150 degrees, which is 50 degrees higher than it should be. So, what can you do to keep your attic from boiling over?

Let’s start with why it’s bad for your attic to overheat. The singles on your roof can only withstand certain temperatures, so when your attic gets too hot it can cause them to deteriorate. Another reason? Your air conditioner will have to work much harder to keep your house cool which can cause energy bills to skyrocket. To prevent these problems you can:

  • Have electric ventilators installed. They have thermostats that will kick the fans on to keep your attic at a recommended 100-110 degrees.

  • You can also have passive vents (gables, soffits or ridge vents) installed. These are openings in the roof that allow hot air to escape.

  • Don’t have insulation in your attic? Well, you should. Choose insulation with an R-factor of at least 19 in order to prevent attic air from heating your living space.
