How to Fix a Leaky Faucet in the Twin Cities

Are you experiencing the double whammy – a leaky toilet and a leaky faucet? Today, we are focusing on how to fix a leaky faucet, and once again this problem can often be solved by an average do-it-yourselfer. You’ll just need a few small tools, a spare part or two and a bit of patience. For a few simple steps to tackle the problem, see below:

  1. Make sure you turn off the water supply before digging in. The last thing you’ll want is to unscrew a piece and end up with an even bigger leak. You should be able to turn the water off at a shutoff valve near the sink, but if you can’t seem to find one, turn it off at the main water supply.

  2. Remove the faucet handle and look at how the faucet was assembled. Make sure to keep this in mind because you may need to refer to it later on when putting the faucet back together.

  3. Using an adjustable wrench or slip-joint pliers, remove the packing nut but be careful not to strip the metal. Then remove the screw that holds the washer and take a look a look at the stem. Replace this part if you notice any damage.

  4. Replace the old washer with a new one, making certain that it’s the same exact size. Washers that “almost” fit will “almost” stop the drop, but your faucet will continue to leak.

  5. Fasten the new washer to the stem, the same way the old one was fastened and then it’s time to reinstall the rest of the handle. This is where that mental image comes into play. Once you have reinstalled the handle, turn the water supply back on and check for leaks.
