Notice a puddle of water near your water heater? Even a small amount of water can turn into a major disaster if you don’t take care of the problem right away. Aside from the fact that a leaky water heater probably isn’t working properly, the leak can cause severe damage to your floors, sub-floors and walls.
When you notice water near the water heater, the first step is to find out if the water heater is actually the source of the leak. Sometimes, nearby pipes or other appliances can form condensation which could be where the water is coming from. Be sure to take a look around and see if the water is coming from somewhere else, then dry up the water using paper towel and check back again the next day.
If there’s water under the water heater again, the first thing you should do is turn off the power supply. If your water heater is electric, you can turn it off at the circuit breaker box. If it’s gas, there should be an on/off switch or dial.
Then turn off the water supply. Most heaters have a valve located above the unit. Keep in mind that water in the tank may be hot so always exercise extreme caution.
Determining the exact location of the leak and the best course of action to go about fixing it can be difficult and should be left to the professionals. That’s where Uptown comes in!
