How to Get Your Home Ready for a Deep Freeze

Grab a few extra layers and throw the heavy quilt on your bed. Twin Cities is in for a deep freeze for the next couple of days, and when temperatures drop down into the 20s and teens, your home’s plumbing system is at a higher risk freezing up. So as you gear up for frigid weather, keep these tips in mind:

  1. Make sure all outdoor faucets are drained and hoses are disconnected.

  2. Set your thermostat no lower than 64°F. You’ll want to make sure the heat kicks on and water runs through the system constantly.

  3. If you haven’t done so already, have a professional come in to drain your sprinkler system. Stagnant water in the lines can cause major problems.

  4. If your pipes have frozen up in the past, consider adding a freeze detector. This will notify you when a pipe has sprung a leak so you can get it taken care of before it becomes a huge mess.

  5. Open cabinets containing pipes so that warm air circulates through.

  6. Allow faucets to drip slowly to prevent the possibility of stagnant water.

  7. Insulate pipes located near exterior walls, in the garage and in the crawl space or basement.

With keeping these tips in mind will allow you worry about one less thing. Now grab that extra sweater and a warm cup of coffee and stay cozy this week!
