It’s that time of year again: when you need to start thinking about freezing pipes. Or you take the proactive approach and insulate them now before they have a chance to freeze and crack. In addition to preventing broken pipes, insulating them can also reduce heat loss and raise water temperature 2-4 degrees so you can give your wallet a bit of break when energy bills show up in the mail.
Insulating your pipes is actually quite simple. You will need to determine the type of insulation you want to use (fiberglass, polyethylene or neoprene) and then figure out how much you’ll need. Most hardware and home improvement stores sell insulation so finding it shouldn’t be a problem either.
As far as installation goes, measure the length of the pipes you want to insulate and then cut the insulation to fit. Use duct tape or cable ties to secure the ends. If using fiberglass, be sure to wear gloves, long sleeves and pants because it can cause skin irritation if it comes in contact. Using a pipe sleeve? Place it on the pipe so the seam faces down and tape, wire or clamp it every foot or two.
