How To Keep Lead Out Of Your Water

We’ve all got enough problems to worry about on a daily basis —
drinking water shouldn’t be one of them. However, lots of homes
have contaminated water and ingesting it can cause some serious issues.
So, how can you keep lead out of your home’s water supply, or at
the very least, out of your home’s plumbing fixtures? Find out below!

How Does Lead Get Into Water Supplies?

The number one contributor of lead in drinking water is corroded plumbing
materials. Any pipes or other plumbing materials (faucets and fixtures)
that contain lead, can quickly contaminate drinking water as they corrode.

Generally, lead pipes and plumbing supplies are found in older cities and
in homes that were built before 1986. However, lead isn’t the only
contributor to contaminated water — brass and chrome fixtures with
lead soldering can be just as bad.

How To Reduce The Risk Of Lead Exposure At Home

There are a number of things you can do if you suspect there is lead in
your home’s water. For starters, use only cold water for drinking
and cooking. Unfortunately, boiling water does not remove lead. We also
suggest flushing pipes by running water for a few seconds before drinking,
taking a shower or doing laundry.

It’s also important to clean your faucet’s screen, or aerator,
regularly. You may also want to consider a more permanent filtration device,
or a whole-home
water filtration system.

Additionally, keep a close eye on older pipes and plumbing fixtures. If
you notice any corrosion or rust, call on an expert plumber right away
to assess the situation.
