How to Keep Your Grass and Your Wallet Green This Season

Did you remember to water your grass, flower beds and container plants today? Let’s face it, we’re entering gardening season and if you’re not keeping your landscape irrigated you’re in for a long, burnt out summer.

There are a few things you need to know in order to conserve water, time and money on your yard and garden this season. Keeping the most targeted, time-efficient methods at the top of your mind can also help to preserve your home’s plumbing and drainage systems.

An Inch A Week

Taking care of your grass? The most important thing is to water smart. Applying too much fertilizer and mowing too short can dry out your lawn and make it turn brown. When watering, make sure water is actually being absorbed. If you notice puddles or runoff, it means you are watering too much, or too often and you should cut back to conserve water.

While all lawns are different and the climate plays a large roll, most lawns require about an inch of water each week. The difficult part is figuring out how long to water each day so you end up with an inch by the end of the week.

Only Water When You Have To

Another important tip to keep in mind is that if you walk across your grass and see footprints, it’s safe to water. If the blades spring back, hold off for now. You’ll also want to pay attention to the forecast because too much watering mixed with rain can cause your drains to back up.
