How To Keep Your Roof And Gutters Leak-Free This Fall

It’s the job of your roof and your gutters to keep you dry, right?
Well, what if they failed at their jobs and water started coming into
your house? You’d have some serious problems on your hands and let’s
face it, you might even panic a little. In order to prevent roof and gutter
leaks this fall, follow the preventative maintenance procedures, below:

Leaky Roofs and Gutters Can Cause…

Even if you don’t think your roof or gutter leak is serious, you
need to act fast. Why? Roof and gutter leaks can allow water to get into
places it shouldn’t, like your home’s framing or sheathing,
and wreak havoc from there.

A few of the problems that can arise from a leaky roof or gutters includes
rotting wood, the formation of mold, destroyed insulation and damaged
ceilings. Sounds like a real headache, right?

How To Test For Leaks

  • Take a flashlight into the attic and look for wet spots, mold or holes
    in the roof.

  • Grab a helper, go up on the roof with a garden hose and spray it around
areas such as the chimney, plumbing and roofing vents, and dormers.

  • Look for damaged shingles.

  • If the weather is cold enough, look for frosted nails or screws coming
through the roof from the outside.

  • Pay attention to your gutters the next time it rains. Make sure water is
being carried far enough away from your home that it has no chance of
entering through the outer walls or the foundation.

  • If there is no rain in the forecast, you can test your gutters for leaks
    using a garden hose.

  • Make sure gutters are tight to the the fascia.

Remember, even small leaks can cause severe damage. If you notice leaks
in your roof or gutters it’s best to take action right away!
