Is Ventilation Important In The Winter?

You, like most homeowners, probably don’t think too much about ventilation
during the colder months of the year. After all, you want warm air to
stay inside the house and the thought of venting it outside doesn’t
make too much sense, right? Well, contrary to popular belief ventilation
is as vital in the winter as it is in the summer, especially in the attic!
Why? Find out below:

Ventilation and Air Quality

You’ve probably heard about the importance of indoor air quality
— and it’s important to think about it all year long. Without
proper ventilation, a variety of issues could occur including too much
moisture in the air which could lead to mold growth, frost, rot and damaged
shingles or even ice dams.

But if the air tends to be so much drier in the winter, how could there
possibly be too much moisture? Well, it’s no surprise that heat
rises and it brings some moisture with it as it heads to the upper levels
of your home — and here’s where the attic comes into play.

Moisture in the Attic

As heat rises and moisture collects in the attic, this is where problems
can begin to arise. Said moisture can begin seeping into your home’s
structure and can cause damage to the framing and roofing materials used
to keep your home intact.

So, how can you prevent these issues from happening in the first place?
It all starts with ventilation.

Intake & Exhaust Vents

There are generally two main types of vents in the attic — intake
vents and exhaust vents. Intake vents pull air from outside into the attic
which allows cool, dry air to circulate which promotes healthier indoor
air in this area of the house.

Exhaust vents draw warmer, moist air from inside of the attic to the outside
of the house which helps eliminate excess moisture.

With the right ventilation in place, you’ll be on your way to improved
indoor air quality all year ‘round!
