Keep Cool Fall Air out with Weatherstripping

Don’t get too anxious, we understand that there’s still a few more weeks of summer and temperatures are still favorable – but it’s time to start thinking about getting your home ready for fall. With that said, take a look around your house in the coming weeks and check for drafts. If you have any old doors in your Twin Cities – St. Paul home that aren’t doing a good job of keeping air out, here’s what you can do to fix it fast:

Step 1: You’re going to need to take the door off the hinges. Remove the pins and take the door out of the opening.

Step 2: Pull off the old, worn weatherstripping and then use a router to put a groove in the bottom edge. Seal the entire bottom edge of the door including the groove with tung oil.

Step 3: Place mechanical weatherstripping into the routed groove and keep it in place with weatherstripping screws. Then set the door back into the opening and replace the hinges.

Step 4: Check to make sure the weatherstripping makes a tight seal against the sill. If not, adjust the screws until it does so.
