Wash These Items by Hand

Dishwashers can really make the clean up after dinner less stressful and less time consuming, but if you’re not careful they can ruin your dinnerware. Coming home after a long day at work to have a prep a meal to feed your family can leave you wanting to toss everything in the dishwasher, but the items below are better off being washed by hand.

Even though dishwashers are a blessing most of the time, refrain from putting the following items in with your next load. You’ll be thankful when they aren’t ruined the next time you need them:

  1. Cast-Iron: what’s better than a cast-iron skillet? You can use them on the stove, over an open fire or even in the oven to create a nice layer of melty cheese atop your favorite dish. But they should never be placed in the dishwasher. Cast-iron must be seasoned before using and a cycle in the dishwasher will undo the hard work and effort you put into seasoning.

  2. Wood: wooden spoons, dishes and cutting boards are knife-friendly and can make cooking a breeze, until you put them in the dishwasher. Hot water and extreme drying temperatures can warp these items or even melt the glue that holds them together. Stick with warm water, soap and a soft-bristled brush to keep them clean.

  3. Insulated Mugs: enjoy hot coffee or tea in the morning? Insulated travel mugs are convenient and environmentally friendly, but throwing them in the dishwasher can be a very bad idea. One cycle can ruin the insulation and then you’ll be left with a cold cup o’ joe.

Not only can a handful of kitchen items get ruined in the dishwasher, your appliance can get damaged too! Even though it may take a few extra minutes each night, some things are simply better off being washed by hand.
