Causes of Uneven Home Heat Distribution
Have some rooms of the house that seem to feel like a sauna when the heat kicks on while other rooms still feel like an ice box? Maybe you have some rooms that feel perfectly comfortable while other members of the family are complaining that it’s too hot or too cold. Well, you’re not alone. There are a number of reasons why a home might feel like it’s heating unevenly and we’ve got a few solutions.
The Furnace Is The Wrong Size
In most homes, the furnace is the main source of heat generation and a furnace is only designed to produce so much heat. This means you could run into some comfort issues if your current furnace is too large or too small for your house.
A simple BTU calculation, with consideration of the square footage of your home, can tell you whether or not your heating system is sized properly.
There Is Only One Zone
Zoned heating systems are designed so that different thermostats control different areas of the home. This provides you with the flexibility to set one area of the house to 68°F while another area can be set to 72°F, for example.
If you only have one heating zone, it means your entire home will unfortunately have to deal with the one temperature setting on your thermostat, regardless of whether or not certain areas are already warmer or cooler.
The Air Vents Are Closed Or Blocked
If you notice that certain rooms feel cooler than others, you’ll want to check the air vents right away. If they’re closed or blocked, warm air from the vents won’t flow into the living space of that room or area, hence why it feels much colder.
The Filter Is Dirty
Your home heating system needs adequate airflow in order to work properly. If the filter is dirty of clogged, it will prevent air from flowing freely through the system which will restrict the amount of warm air that flows through the vents. Make sure your furnace’s filter is cleaned or replaced once a month.
