What Does The Freon Ban Mean For Me?
If you’ve watched the news over the last couple of months, or you happen to check in on the hvac industry from time to time, there’s a good chance you’ve heard about the ban on freon going into effect. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set forth regulations that will prevent this refrigerant from being produced and imported in the United States beginning January 1, 2020. So, what does this mean for you and your current air conditioners? Find out, below!
What Is The Freon Ban?
Freon, the common name for the vapor-compression refrigeration chemical used in most air conditioners, contains a substance by the name of HCFC-22. Due to its contribution to global warming and its negative effects on the ozone layer, the Environmental Protection Agency has gone ahead and imposed a ban on the production and importation of the chemical.
It is important to note however, that while the production and importation of the chemical will not be legal beginning in 2020, the sale of freon will still be allowed in the United States. While the supply will certainly dwindle, it will still be acceptable to purchase freon and continue to use systems that operate on freon, until it runs out.
Will I Have To Replace My Air Conditioners?
The short answer is, no. You can continue to run your air conditioners as is for as long as they last. However, it will become more and more difficult to repair freon-based air conditioners and once your current cooling systems run out of it, you eventually won’t be able to get any more.
We do suggest however, looking into a new cooling system now, so you can be proactive and still receive cool air in your home come spring and summer. After all, you won’t want to run out of freon and therefore have your air conditioner blowing lukewarm air once temperatures begin to rise again.
